Non vacuum benchtop sterilisers are compact, steam sterilisers. They are used when smaller numbers of instruments need processing throughout the day. They are common in many healthcare settings, such as hospitals, dental practices, veterinary clinics, and GP surgeries. Rather than handling large wrapped loads, these machines are intended for solid, unwrapped instruments. These instruments can be sterilised without the need for a vacuum stage.
Although the machine itself is fairly straightforward, getting consistent results still relies on good practice. Loading too many instruments into the chamber, or placing them so steam cannot circulate properly, can affect the cycle without it being obvious. The units display might show a completed cycle, though there can still be issues sitting quietly in the background. The non vacuum benchtop steriliser is one of those machines that rewards attention to the small details.
How do non vacuum benchtop sterilisers work?
Unlike vacuum sterilisers, these machines remove air using gravity rather than a vacuum pump. As steam enters the chamber it gradually pushes cooler air out before the sterilisation phase begins. It can sound simple enough, the way instruments are loaded plays a bigger part than many expect. Even something as ordinary as two bowls sitting together can stop steam reaching every surface properly.
- Steam displacement: steam enters the chamber, gradually forcing air out before sterilisation begins
- Sterilisation cycle: temperature and pressure are maintained for the required time to sterilise instruments safely
- Cooling phase: once a cycle finishes, the load is allowed to cool before handling, reducing the chance of contamination
The process is largely automatic though it still needs routine testing. Door seals wear over time, drains become restricted or instruments simply end up loaded in the wrong position. Small things can have a habit of becoming bigger jobs later.
Training at AVM
Understanding how these machines operate is only part of the job. Engineers also need to know how to test them correctly, recognise when performance begins to drift and carry out checks that meet current guidance. That practical knowledge is what our training focuses on.
Our Non Vacuum Benchtop Sterilisers Weekly Testing (ENG13) courses provide the skills required to carry out weekly testing for engineers who already have previous experience working with benchtop sterilisers. We also deliver Quarterly Testing, together with Annual Testing courses, building on that existing knowledge with more detailed testing procedures in line with current requirements.
The aim is not simply to complete another test. It is understanding what the results are telling you, spotting the little signs that something is changing and knowing what should happen next. That confidence tends to come through experience, though good training gives it a solid start.
