AVM launches intuitive online Decontamination course

Market-leading decontamination specialists AVM Services have launched a range of online training courses aimed at students and professionals in the Sterile Services sector.

The courses, which cover Germs, Decontamination and Quality Management Systems, are designed to give learners an in-depth, accessible and intuitive way to absorb knowledge and proficiency within these topics, all with the ultimate aim of achieving a City & Guilds certification.

AVM Services has been a decontamination specialist since 1989, offering a range of consultancy and training services to the medical sector including:

  • Online decontamination training courses
  • Specialist decontamination training courses conducted by our highly-qualified authorising engineers (decontamination) and specialist personnel, accredited trainers and A1/A2 assessors
  • Professional advice and guidance on decontamination standards, procedures and compliances
  • Validation and compliance assessments
  • Authorising and auditing services
  • Professional servicing and maintenance services for decontamination equipment

What is the Decontamination course?

The decontamination course is the second (Germs being the first) of two online courses students need to complete in order to gain access to the Principles of Decontamination Stage 1 section which contains the City and Guilds exam.

This course covers the importance of decontamination in a healthcare setting, with regard to medical instruments and endoscopes.

Specifically, it includes the three main stages of decontamination in a Sterile Service Department – washing, disinfection and sterilisation, along with the inspection, assessment and packing process in an SSD cleanroom.

The course also covers the machines that are used in these processes, such as the instrument washer-disinfectors, and provides information on how they function, the different kinds and uses, and why they are necessary.

In the 4th module, the different kinds and uses of sterilisers, and the methods of sterilisation, are covered.

The endoscope module looks at the processes used to decontaminate thermolabile (destroyed by heat) endoscopes, and why they are necessary to prevent spread of infection within a hospital. The various steps and methods used are demonstrated.

The water module provides information on the various types of water and water treatments that may have to be executed prior to hospital use. The importance of regular water testing is also discussed, along with the types of tests and meaning of results that are carried out frequently.

Why is it important?

Hospital Acquired Infections (HAIs, otherwise known as nosocomial infections) are estimated to have caused up to 28,500 deaths in the UK (2016-2017). The Decontamination course offers learners the chance to gain invaluable knowledge and practical guidance to help implement and maintain standards in disinfection and decontamination to help reduce the number of patients adversely affected by infection.

Who can do this course?

This course is ideal for a staff member who is training to work in decontamination in a healthcare setting, as it provides key insight into why the various methods are used, and the consequences should it not be performed properly.

There is no prior training or knowledge necessary, however, it may be beneficial for the learner to have completed the germs course so that they understand the basic physiology of the pathogens that may be present on soiled instruments, endoscopes or in water.

Why choose AVM Services Courses?

Intuitive & easy to digest

AVM’s online training courses are delivered via the Learning Management System (LMS) platform developed by Cambridge University Hospital.

Using intuitive navigation and easy-to-follow instructions, AVM courses are vastly different to current courses on the market as they are video-based with interactive elements.

  • Learners are guided through each concept by a video narrator, helping both visual and auditory learners
  • Courses include animations, pictures, graphics and actual footage of SSDs and endoscope reprocessing units to help with knowledge transfer, uptake and retention
  • Large swaths of text and static PowerPoint presentations are avoided to ensure learners are kept engaged, and able to digest the new information quickly and easily without feeling overwhelmed

Highest quality training

Training courses are created and produced by expert authorising engineers (decontamination) and specialists including accredited trainers and A1/A2 assessors, meaning information in the courses is current, relevant and of the highest quality.

A City and Guild’s certification is available at the end of select courses.
