Course Structure

The Decontamination Course is structured across four modules:

  • Introduction to Decontamination
  • Washer-Disinfectors
  • Water
  • Sterilisers
  • Endoscopes

The Decontamination Course covers the importance of decontamination in a healthcare setting, with regard to medical instruments and endoscopes. The course covers the three main stages of decontamination in a Sterile Service Department – washing, disinfection and sterilisation along with the inspection, assembly and packing process in the ‘clean room’. The course also covers the machines that are used in these processes, such as the instrument washer-disinfectors, and provides information on how they function, the different kinds and uses, and why they are necessary. In the 4th module, the different kinds of sterilisers are discussed, along with the methods of sterilisation and the uses for these kinds.

The endoscope module looks at the processes used to decontaminate thermolabile (destroyed by heat) endoscopes, and why they are necessary to prevent spread of infection within a hospital. The various steps and methods used are demonstrated.

The water module provides information on the various types of water and water treatments that may have to be executed prior to hospital use. The importance of regular water testing is also discussed, along with the types of tests and the meaning of results that are carried out frequently.

This course is ideal for a staff member who is training to work in a sterile service department, as it provides key insight into why the various methods are used, and the consequences should it not be performed properly. There is no prior training or knowledge necessary, however, it may be beneficial for the learner to have completed the germs course so that they understand the basic physiology of the pathogens that may be present on soiled instruments, endoscopes or in water.

Together with the Germs course, this course provides the training for candidates to undertake an online examination with a pass awarding the Principles of Decontamination Stage 1 City & Guilds certification.

Why Choose AVM Courses?

AVM courses are vastly different from current courses on the market as they are video based with some even containing interactive elements. There are no Powerpoints to scroll through, and no daunting walls of text for the learner to digest on their own. Instead, the learner is guided through each concept through narration, which benefits both visual and auditory learners. The courses also include animations, pictures and footage of SSD’s and endoscope reprocessing units, to assist with knowledge uptake and retention.

AVM courses are written and produced by specialists, so the information in the courses is current and relevant.

A City and Guilds certification exam can be taken after completing the necessary courses.
